The Real Story
One Saturday morning, my Mother awakened me from a deep slumber and asked, “Is your father sexually abusing you?”
“Yes,” popped out before I could stop myself.
I was startled awake by my response, but this honesty allowed me to break down crying and fall into her arms. I was so afraid of what was to come, but at this moment, I felt my mother’s courage and bravery as never before. My mom got the truth she was seeking. And all Hell broke loose that day.
She asked her questions of me about how things happened. She asked point-blank if he was sexually abusing me. I shared his bribery strategy by telling her using his exact words.
He had said early on, “This will kill her if she ever finds out.”
The second most used threat was that our family would be split apart. He declared he would end up with me and things would be worse. What 12-year-old is going to stand up to the fear instilled by her primary authority figure… her dad? He subtly reminded me in different ways of these possibilities over many years if the secret got out.
My father defended his despicable actions. Ultimately, convinced that it would never happen again, my mom allowed him to stay in our home. She gave him another chance at their marriage, believing what he swore.
